and The World Climate Summit Team

Thank you for joining us for the second annual World Climate Summit – where we have been honored to host true leaders from industry, finance, government and civil society.

Our goal was to learn, share, collaboratively strategize and plan, and launch new initiatives to address climate change and build the global clean economy.

Your presence is a testament to the interest, innovation, and momentum of industry to address climate change. In all, we had approximately 800 registered attendees from five continents. We have had active discussions with over 100 speakers – all high-level experts in their industry and fields.
We have heard international luminaries and pioneers like President Jacob Zuma, 6 of his Ministers, Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of UNFCCC, Dr. Zweli Mkhize, Premier of Kwazulu Natal, José Maria Figueres, Mary Robinson, and Connie Hedegaard, EU Commissioner on Climate Action and many CEOs from leading companies.

The tenor of these past two days has been energized and positive, yet also with an urgency and recognition of the need for accelerating action.

Beginning with Christiana Figueres on our opening panel, the conference repeatedly had a clear call to action for business leaders to “speak up and speak loudly” and we’ve seen how iconic brands like Coca-Cola can engage the public such as through its “Arctic Home” campaign.

We discussed the power of collaboration with the Consumer Goods Forum, representing $3 Trillion in revenue — starting with phasing out HFC’s and committing to net-neutral deforestation by 2020 across their supply chains for four key commodities, and the sustainable commodities roundtables as noted in our Forests session.

In our opening panel on growing the global clean economy, our experts such as Juan Costa Climent of Ernst & Young advised us to reconsider what we value and therefore are measuring on our balance sheets. If we are valuing quality of life and opportunity and security, we must put a price on carbon and value nature’s services to drive innovation and investment to underpin our prosperity and stability. We heard about efforts in this arena by Dow Chemical, Coca Cola, FEMSA, and also Puma, which is working with PwC.

Many roundtables with experts and VIPs were held. Siemens led many practitioners’ lounges to promote the work they are doing in mobility, cities, finance and infrastructure. Alstom organized a private roundtable on clean power as a path to sustainable development. The European Investment Bank led a session on the creation of a low carbon economy with business and financiers.

Nedbank organized a networking lounge that was fully constructed with sustainable materials. Many VIPs, speakers and delegates collaborated in that lounge, developing new deals and projects.

Denmark presented their new appropriately named brand, the State of Green, and announced the second annual Global Green Growth Forum to be held on October 9-10, 2012.

Zero Emissions Platform presented the need for Carbon Capture and Storage as a tool in addressing the carbon challenge, and HP talked about the need and value for improving energy efficiency and waste reduction, recovery and recycling.

We learned about new business models from outside the traditional green sector, such as that of Vestergaard Frandsen, showing us how to build an entire business on humanitarian outcomes, a model now benefitting the environment as well as showing the value the carbon market can bring to development.

Finally, as President Robinson reminded us in her role moderating our “Sustainable Energy For All” plenary session, we can and must create a better future and more equitable shared prosperity for all.
Saturday’s Gigaton Awards lauded business leaders who pioneer new approaches to reducing emissions while increasing profits, recognizing Philips Lighting, Tesco, Schneider Electric, Centrica, and SwissCom as top achievers in their categories for 2011.

The Gigaton Prize — awarded to the company that has contributed to the greatest amount of absolute carbon emissions reduction worldwide — went to Chinese solar giant, SunTech.

And for the first time, a special Gigaton Prize was awarded to a country for investing the most in renewable energy – not surprisingly it was Germany.

We also tracked progress on initiatives launched last year at our World Climate Summit:

In 2010, OPIC promised to provide at least $300 million in financing for renewable energy. On Saturday we learned that OPIC has TRIPLED its promise – having committed $1.1 billion in financing to renewable energy, mobilizing more than $2 billion more in private investment. This is a ten-fold increase in OPIC’s renewables investments and shows the demand for investment in this sector.

Last year, the Carbon War Room announced the first ever universal energy index for the shipping industry (www.shippingefficiency.org), ranking ships by their energy performance. This year registered users from 24 countries consulted the site to guide their shipping decisions. For 2011, the Carbon War Room is expanding work to the airline industry.

Last year, Colin Turner of greenTEK ventures announced a $150 million fund to invest in clean technology in Mexico and this year they have launched an approximately $100 million fund for Southern Africa and already have had promising connections here that I’ve been hearing about.

More new commitments, this year included:

The Global Adaptation Institute launched open access Global Adaptation Index™ (GaIn™II), the first tool specifically designed to galvanize private sector investment in adaptation.

The BMW Group announced 3 major sustainability initiatives

A South African e-mobility experience to show the public the better clean energy future with the MINI E at a series of countrywide road shows in the first half of 2012.

A waste-to-energy project in conjunction with the City of Tshwane.

A COP17 Legacy Project to boost education and health care in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Dow Chemical Company announced two innovations:

A new dual loop design for concentrated solar power plants increasing efficiency and power output while reducing investment cost; and

Helping students develop the Next Generation of Near-Zero Dwellings. At the end of January, 2012, Dow will announce the winners of the Dow Solar Design-to-Zero contest – part of a global effort to stimulate innovation and dialogue on trends for sustainable construction. (www.designtozero.com)

Conservation International launched three innovative efforts to catalyze public-private partnerships for healthy sustainable ecosystems and economies worldwide.

The Sustainable Landscapes Partnership will mobilize $20 million in funding for REDD and low-carbon development.

The Althelia Climate Fund will be the largest public-private fund with $300 million for forest carbon and sustainable land-use.

They created CI’s Carbon Fund, a developer’s guidebook.

The Prince of Wales’s Corporate Leaders Group on Climate Change brings business voices to government, with over 350 companies and 37 countries now signed on to the Two-Degree Challenge Communique, a powerful platform for business to increase our impact.

This is a great progress. Thank you all for your leadership.

We would like to recognize and thank our Diamond sponsor, Siemens; Platinum sponsors Nedbank and PwC; Conference Sponsor Ernst & Young who also audited the Gigaton Awards; Gold sponsors The Coca-Cola Company, Alstom, HP, Brasil Foods, Vestergaard Frandsen, Philips, Vale, and the Zero Emissions Platform. Our Institutional Partners: European Investment Bank and State of Green. And we enjoyed support from Inerjys, Avon, BMW, and REONET. All of our sponsors and institutional partners made this event possible.

Thanks also to our media partners: Time, CNN International, Hub Culture, Revolve, Clean Energy Pipeline, Greenbiz.com, Recharge News, Climate Action Programme, and Green Futures.
And thank you to the rest of our partners and supporters from governments, NGO’s, multilateral institutions – including the following United Nations agencies: UN Global Compact, UNEP FI, and UN PRI. We’re grateful for all of your support and although a long list, it’s this breadth and depth that seeds the ideas and relationships that will grow our impact going forward.

Finally, I’d like to thank the co-Founders of WCS Jens Nielsen and Michael Mathres, and the rest of the World Climate Limited team Patrick van Leeuwen, Tricia Dunlap, and Tobias Friis. Here in South Africa we also enjoyed invaluable support from the Forge Marketing team of Pat Dambe, Pinky Ngxulelo, and Susie White as well as Umlilo Brands – Nikki Webber, Shaun Brickell, and Faryn Halstead. As we look to the future, we will welcome everyone to Rio + 20 and Qatar next December at COP18. Thank you for joining us.

1. Why do you work in climate change?
Quite simply, because climate change is our biggest global challenge – and one which is becoming more pressing with every year. We are committed also because the technologies to reverse climate change and bring about a low-carbon civilization already exist. Siemens can play a leading role in defining and driving this.

2. Which climate change project or initiative in your company are you most proud of?
In recent years, our company has gone from individual projects and initiatives to making sustainability the core of its business strategy. We are most proud, therefore, of the combined synergy possible when all of Siemens works together towards this goal. In the last fiscal year, for instance, our Environmental Portfolio resulted in carbon reductions of over 300 million tons at customer sites – a visible and growing intervention.

3. What are you looking forward to at this year’s World Climate Summit?
Such conferences can tend to create a wave of hope and disappointment – as political agendas come face to face. But there is also the very real opportunity of showing what good has been done already in reversing climate change, and how innovative programs across the public and private sectors are realizing smart infrastructures. At Siemens we are looking forward especially to the engagement and exchange with these partners

4. What are you most proud of and who are your personal heroes?
The generation that is answering climate change is already full of unknown heroes, from all walks of life. Perhaps the best role models going forward are indigenous cultures, tribes that have always been aligned to the earth’s natural resources. Their way of looking at the world is one that can refresh and re-inspire us. One of my favourite examples here is an African proverb: “Treat the Earth well. It was not given to you by your parents. It was loaned to you by your children.”

About Siemens
Only by using innovative products and solutions we can combat climate change while continuing to generate economic growth. Siemens is a leader in sustainable infrastructure technologies with its unique environmental portfolio, which in fiscal 2010 accelerated growth with a revenue of € 28 billion and helped customers save up to 270 million tons of CO2. Walking the talk, Siemens is also aiming at reducing CO2 emission intensity by 20 percent within the company between fiscal 2006 and 2011.
1. Why do you work in climate change?
Tackling climate change is not only a necessity, but most of all is the most sensible and smartest way to put the world on a sustainable development pathway. This will have a triple benefit for citizens / consumers; our living environment as well as our economy.

2. Which climate change project or initiative in your company are you most proud of?
I am most proud of the global program that we created and lead internationally to phase-out in-efficient lighting and to switch to energy efficient (more and more LED-based) lighting solutions.

3. What are you looking forward to at this year’s World Climate Summit?
We are looking for the creation of more momentum towards sustainable development, showcasing energy efficient LED lighting as one of the very attractive areas where decisive action is being taken. We hope this will support the international UNFCCC process, and will inspire other sectors to create and step-up similar approaches.

4. What are you most proud of in regards to any climate change projects and initiatives?
The good news is that there are quite a few people – that participate in COP17 – that are inspirational examples. From a personally perspective I find Kandeh Yumkella, Christiana Figueres and Richard Branson such ‘heroes’, as they combine a constructive vision for sustainable development with a very skilled capability to communicate this vision to a broad range of stakeholders, thus creating momentum for change.

1. Why do you work in climate change?
I am the Executive Vice President for CO2 for Shell. The world needs to reduce CO2 emissions but this action needs to be reconciled with population growth, economic growth and doubling of the demand for energy by 2050. Shell’s strategy is to invest to grow its production of oil and gas to meet growing demand for energy. However, we are committed to considering CO2 emissions in our commercial decisions and we are focusing on four key areas: supplying more natural gas to reduce CO2 emissions from the power sector, biofuels to reduce CO2 emissions from road transport, progressing CO2 capture and storage technology and implementing energy efficiency measures in our operations.

2. Which climate change project or initiative in your company are you most proud of?
Replacing coal with natural gas in power plants can cut CO2 emissions by 50% and it’s a solution available now. Natural gas will stay attractive in the future too. It complements the intermittency of renewable electricity and, when combined with CCS, could cut power plant CO2 emissions by 90%.

3. What are you looking forward to at this year’s World Climate Summit?
Meeting others who are working to address the CO2 challenge and sharing ideas. No one person has a monopoly on good ideas and recent work by the European Union’s Zero Emissions Platform has actually found that increased cooperation in tackling the CO2 challenge delivers a substantial economic value.

4. What are you most proud of in regards to any climate change projects and initiatives?
Two main achievements stand out. Firstly, establishing a dedicated CO2 function within Shell, building the team and adding real value to the business on how to succeed in an increasingly CO2 constrained world. The second is helping to create the European Union’s Zero Emission Platform (ZEP). The ZEP is a complete multi-stakeholder, multi-disciplinary group working on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and is delivering tangible results in terms of progressing this essential technology.

5. Who is a personal or professional hero of yours, and how did they inspire you?
Isaac Newton

About Zero Emissions Platform
Founded in 2005 on the initiative of the European Commission, the European Technology Platform for Zero Emission Fossil Fuel Power Plants (known as the Zero Emissions Platform, or ZEP) represents a unique coalition of stakeholders united in their support for CO2 Capture and Storage (CCS) as a critical solution for combating climate change. Indeed, it is not possible to achieve EU or global CO2 reduction targets cost-effectively without CCS, providing 20% of the global cuts required by 2050. Members include European utilities, oil and gas companies, equipment suppliers, national geological surveys, academic institutions and environmental NGOs, and we collectively advise the EU on all matters related to CCS. Our goal: to make CCS commercially available by 2020 and accelerate wide-scale deployment.

Robert Marshall, President and CEO, Earth Networks adds: “The world is experiencing an increase in more dangerous and extreme weather events. Society needs to be equipped and prepared with weather information and the earliest alerting systems available to mitigate the impact of storms, flooding, droughts and other extremes. The need for dynamic weather and climate intelligence at local levels is more critical than ever for saving lives and property from climate variability and building resilience. Technology now enables delivery of information and warnings to people in real-time, such as through mobile phones.

Earth Networks operates the largest global weather, lightning and climate observation networks to empower decision-makers and citizens with the most precise and advanced information. We recently launched an expansive greenhouse gas observation network to measure, quantify and map regional, local and city-specific carbon emissions and uptakes for accurate measurement, reporting and verification (MRV). Understanding the interplay between weather and carbon emissions, and the changes over time, is critical for improving climate science and assessing its impact on the environment. We look forward to collaborating with the delegates at the conference and closing reception of the World Climate Summit on topics such as establishing weather observation infrastructure, providing early warnings for extreme weather, and precisely measuring carbon emissions at local scales.”

1. Why do you work in climate change?
Climate Change is strategic for BRF. We know our activity is contributing to greenhouse gases emissions, so we are structuring a management in climate change, performing emissions diagnosis in our activities through the preparation of GHG inventory, identifying opportunities for emissions reductions and improving process efficiency. Furthermore, we understand our value chain impacts on the environment and we are looking for synergies with our supply chain in order to reduce indirect emissions in our activities.

2. Which climate change project or initiative in your company are you most proud of?
BRF has developed some initiatives to control and reduce environmental impacts (consumption and emission) of the company’s operation. As examples we can present:

Energetic Excellence Program

The objective of this program is increase energy efficiency at Company’s operation. BRF counts on a working team for accomplishment of diagnosis and identification of opportunities for increasing energy efficiency of both equipment and processes, to ensure better natural resources management. Based on the studies, plans were prepared for each industrial unit and reflected in 420 actions of either an operational or investment nature. As a result of this work, BRF was able to record a saving of 341,496 GJ of electricity in 2010, compared with the preceding year, a reduction of 4.78% in total indirect energy consumption. Hence, in addition to reducing the environmental impacts caused by the extraction and processing of energy, these initiatives have allowed BRF to cut costs in product processing and increase competitiveness. Examples of improvements during the year were: updating of technology, improving the efficiency of refrigeration systems; standardization and training of operators. In 2011, Company’s target is to save 250 thousand GJ of electric energy. Moreover, it is important to mention that 94,89% of all directly energy consumed by the Company in 2010 came from renewable sources.

3S Program: Sustainable hog harming system

Project premises:
· Greenhouse effect gas emission reduction aligned to Kyoto Protocol guidelines;
· Potential reduction of 591.418 ton CO2 eq./year (40% of BRF Pig Farming Greenhouse Effect), according to UN methodology;
· 10 year-long project;
· Partnership: Sadia Institute of Sustainability, Perdigao Institute of Sustainability and AgCert;
· In 2010 the reduction amounted to 137,870 tonnes of CO2eq.

3. What are you looking forward to at this year’s World Climate Summit?
We expect to discuss the agenda and the roles of companies in relation to climate change. Also, BRF believes that the climate change theme is extremely important for the future of economic growth and the World Climate Summit will provide the opportunity to evaluate this context and understand how other organizations are addressing this subject. In this context, BRF wants to be an organization which makes a positive contribution to combating climate change, participating in and influencing public policies and sectoral policies on the subject.

4. Who is a personal or professional hero of yours, and how did they inspire you?
I don´t have only one person or source of inspiration. I admire the work of several people in the field of climate change, and I think the combination of experiences and opinions is what has enabled the society forward. I think we need to look at the global warming challenge in a systemic and multidisciplinary way, in order to provide a transformative change for the society and our planet.

About Brasil Foods
BRF BrasilFoods is one of the largest food companies in the world by market capitalization, leader in the global production of proteins, with a 9% share of international trade for the sector and the largest exporter of poultry meat. In 2010, the Company was ranked the third largest exporter in Brazil. The product portfolio is made up of more than three thousand items, in the segments of poultry, pork, beef, processed meats, milk, dairy products, margarines, pastas, frozen dishes and vegetables and other processed products.

The company’s has several brands such as: Perdigão, Sadia, Qualy, Doriana, Rezende, Batavo, Elegê, Deline, Speedy Pollo, Fribo and Freski. The Company operates 60 plants throughout Brazil and three overseas (dairy products in Argentina and units of Plusfood in the United Kingdom and The Netherlands). BRF BrasilFoods operates 24 overseas commercial offices and has a relationship with more than 5 thousand clients in 140 countries on the five continents. BRF’s workforce of 113 thousand makes it one of the largest employers in Brazil. In 2010, it sold 5.7 million tons of product and reported net sales of R$ 22.7 billion, 59.6% of this to the domestic market and 40.4%, to export market.Read more about Brasil Foods at: www.brasilfoods.com.

1. Why do you work in climate change?
Any self-respecting business, that wants to be around for any length of time in the future, will have climate stabilisation and environmental sustainability as core components of its overall strategic objectives right now. With a global carbon budget that will last around 25 years before we all have to stop emitting carbon or face serious environmental catastrophe, the world is simply running out of time to do something about climate change. I firmly believe that business can, and must, take the lead in this and work together to realise the low carbon future we absolutely require.

But deadlines aside, for Nedbank Group, working to address climate change has been a natural progression along our more than 20-year environmental sustainability journey. Our commitment to the environment has earned us a reputation as South Africa’s ‘green’ bank. We have always held environmental awareness as a top priority for our bank, so the increased awareness, in recent years, of the need to address climate change meant that we naturally undertook to lead in this regard too. Our achievement of carbon neutrality in 2010 was a significant milestone in this carbon journey, and is one that we are now leveraging to maximize our effectiveness and influence in the carbon management space.

As a bank we’re not a high carbon emitter. But that doesn’t mean we can’t be a highly effective carbon ‘mitigator’. And we accept our responsibility to invest whatever resources we can – whether human, financial or intellectual – into being part of the climate change solution.

2. Which climate change project or initiative in your company are you most proud of?
Without a doubt, Nedbank Group’s achievement of carbon neutrality was a highlight of our environmental sustainability journey. It is an achievement of which everyone in the group is justifiably proud due the way it was achieved. We do not ‘buy’ our neutrality, we approach it from a ‘reduce first, then offset where necessary’ angle. This means everyone in the group had to work together to achieve some very challenging reduction targets – not just in terms of carbon emissions, but also relating to the use of other resources like water, electricity and paper, as well as focusing on lowering waste generation and transport usage.

Only once we have reduced as much as possible in any given year do we offset the remaining emissions through carbon credits. And in line with our commitment to integrated sustainability, these credits were obtained from African projects that are benefitting the environment and the communities in the regions they operate.

But pride in this achievement aside, Nedbank Group’s carbon neutrality has unlocked many more doors to the group in realizing its vision of leading in sustainability. It has positioned us to collaborate closely and effectively with like-minded organisations in the public and private sector in order to develop policies and strategies that will help address climate change. In addition, carbon neutrality has provided platform on which Nedbank can develop environmentally driven products, services and solutions that will enable the climate change mitigation efforts of our individual and corporate clients and all our other stakeholders.

3. What are you looking forward to at this year’s World Climate Summit?
To my mind, the solution the world need to climate change will only be found when we put our heads, and hearts, together. Events like the World Climate Summit facilitate this kind of collaboration and serve to unite the world via a shared vision for the future and the role we all have to play in achieving it.

So, while it is certainly exciting to be able to hear what people and businesses around the world have achieved and learned regarding climate change in recent months and years, I think it is going to be even more exciting to witness, first hand, the shared commitment of all participants to finding or developing the climate change solutions that could, literally, save the planet.

About Nedbank Group
Positioned as a ‘bank for all’ Nedbank Group is South Africa’s fourth largest banking group
measured by assets and provides a range of wholesale and retail banking, insurance,
asset and wealth management, and carbon financing and renewable energy investment
advisory services. The group primarily focuses on southern Africa, but has a vision to grow its
business reach across the African continent.

Widely regarded as South Africa’s ‘green’ bank, Nedbank Group is recognised for its
sustainability leadership. This is the result of the group’s integrated approach that combines
the four pillars of environmental, social, economic and cultural sustainability to ensure that it
delivers sustainable benefits for all its stakeholders, the environment, and the communities in
which it operates.

The bank recently became the first financial services organisation on the African continent to
achieve carbon neutrality. This achievement capped an environmental sustainability journey
of more than 20 years characterised by a number of notable achievements, including:

the first African financial services signatory to the Equator Principles,

one of only three companies with JSE primary listings to be included on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index,

Member of UNEP FI

Signatory to the UN Global Compact

1. Why do you work in climate change?
Climate change is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) societal challenges of our time. As part of The Coca-Cola Company, I have an opportunity and a certain duty to make a significant, positive contribution.

2. Which climate change project or initiative in your company are you most proud of?
Our eKOfreshment, Sustainable Refrigeration Program, has the potential to catalyze change in the commercial refrigeration sector. HFCs are projected to grow to between 9-19% of climate change emissions by the middle of the century. HFC-free solutions are available; we have deployed 400,000 already and we’re working to phase out the use of HFCs in all new cold drink equipment by 2015.

3. What are you looking forward to at this year’s World Climate Summit?
More than just business showing support for the climate negotiations, the World Climate Summit offers an opportunity for business, government and civil society organizations to share and brainstorm solutions. I am especially looking forward to a more intensive dialogue on climate adaptation. We are very focused as a Company on water resource issues — and water is the medium through which climate impacts will be increasingly manifest, with potentially significant implications for Africa.

4. Finally. Who is a personal or professional hero of yours, and how did they inspire you?
My mentor on all things sustainability is Tim Wirth, former Senator from Colorado and now President of the UN Foundation. He is a tireless advocate for taking action to avert a climate crisis and I continue to learn from him.

About The Coca-Cola Company
At Coca-Cola, we recognize that climate change has the potential to significantly affect the sustainability of our business and supply chain. Therefore, we are increasingly focused on innovative energy efficiency and climate protection solutions to help reduce costs and minimize our environmental impact. Due to the size and scale of our global system—more than 900 bottling plants, a fleet of approximately 200,000 delivery vehicles and more than 10 million vending machines and coolers—our efforts to increase energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions can have far-reaching impacts. That’s why, for example, we set a goal to phase out hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), well-known contributors to global warming, in all new cold-drink equipment by 2015. We currently have more than 400,000 units of HFC-free refrigeration equipment in use throughout our system. Our investment in renewable energy resources, energy management devices for cold-drink equipment and fuel-efficiency solutions for delivery vehicles, has helped us improve our overall energy use and efficiency.

Mikkel Vestergaard Frandsen, CEO, Vestergaard Frandsen said, ““Innovative and sustainable solutions to the global water crisis are critically important. According to 2010 World Health Organization data, almost 1 billion people in the world lack access to safe drinking water. Diarrheal disease is the second leading cause of death in children under five years old, and is responsible for killing 1.5 million children every year. Children who are malnourished or have impaired immunity are most at risk of life-threatening diarrhea. We are hopeful that the’Carbon For Water™’ program will also have a positive impact not only on diarrhea disease but also reducing respiratory disease by reducing particulate matter in the homes, a major killer of children in Kenya and the developing world. According to the WHO, pneumonia is the single largest cause of death in children worldwide. The use of the LifeStraw® Family water filter can reduce child mortality and improve maternal health by providing access to safe drinking water. When considered in these terms, access to safe drinking water from LifeStraw® Family can effectively address Millennium Development Goals 4, 5, and 6,”

About Vestergaard Frandsen
Vestergaard Frandsen is a private company operating under a humanitarian entrepreneurship business model, innovating technologies that improve health in developing countries. Earlier this year we distributed 880,000 household water filters in western Kenya. The filters give 4.5 million people the means to avoid waterborne illness, and also relieve environmental pressure as forest wood is no longer needed to boil water. These fuel savings are the basis for the carbon credits that finance the program. www.vestergaard-frandsen.com.
